What a gem hidden just north of The Dalles, across The Dalles bridge. This huge park has something for everyone. Hiking, fishing, boating, nature hikes, and most of all petroglyphs. A well kept secret, yet widely open and welcoming place. Be sure to stop for one or more reasons, you won't be disappointed. $10 day use fee applies, cash or check only
Beautiful park! We stayed here to camp for 2 nights. Unfortunately, the lake had toxic algae bloom, so we could not swim or use the lake. If you are planning to swim, paddle board or kayak, I would recommend checking in advance if the lake has toxic algae bloom, since their website does not provide this information. The camp host where amazing and keep the park clean! Also you can buy ice here. It is indeed very windy so be prepared.
The pictograph and petroglyphs tour is incredible. If you can make it for a tour (only offered weekend mornings at 9am) i highly recommend it. Make sure you have an appointment before arriving.
Nearby Horsethief butte is also charming, not the largest rock formation but great views from the top. I went on kind of a cold and sporadically rainy day, I would prefer that to hot and sunny as it can get VERY hot in summer. I would have been nervous about snakes if it were really sunny anyway. Lots of rock climbers on the day I went. The wildflowers are very pretty this year
There is some really old stuff there and a boat launch at the river. Nice lake too
This is a simple place of great significance. The pictographs are at the entrance to the old Celilo falls rapids a sacred spot.
Simply gorgeous! Words can't begin to describe the majesty of this beautiful country.
Cute little park with some neat Indian petroglyphs super close. The train was loud…so either bring ear plugs or be a heavy sleeper. Overall, the park host was SUPER FRIENDLY and helpful. Beautiful view of the lake and nice place to walk around.
I really liked that there were only around 10 RV spots.
I hiked mountain ranch road to vista loop to 8 mile creek, then checked out the ranch and farming equipment. I did 5 miles on 7/2/18. The trails are very well maintained. Nice parking area with a restroom. You do need a discovery pass or pay 10$ to park here. Beautiful wildflowers, views of the gorge towards the Dalles and east, creek views and a few information plaques on the way. Very windy when I went up, could very easily blow a person over. Google maps directions are wrong, go past the ranch on the main, past the pond to get to the parking area. There is also picnic tables and bus/trailer parking and turn around loops.
